Who Has the Best First Class Service?
The title for which airline has the best first class service tends to shift every year. In 2017, according to independent airport and airline reviewing organization Skytrax, the best first class service is offered by Etihad Airlines.
Travel blogger Lucky, of One Mile At A Time, agrees with Skytrax and declares that Etihad provides the absolute best first class product of any airline.
I had the good fortune to be on the inaugural Etihad A380 flight between Abu Dhabi and London late last year. While I’ve long been a fan of Etihad, they’ve truly revolutionized first class with the introduction of their A380 First Class Apartment. They’re the first airline to have a single aisle configuration on an A380, meaning there’s just one seat on each side of the aisle in first class.
The Apartments are massive — you can actually close your door and walk around in each Apartment. Heck, I’m pretty sure you could host the whole first class cabin in your Apartment if you wanted to.
Etihad also has fantastic catering (at least when they load enough food), with an onboard chef. The onboard chef even has a “pantry” of sorts, so if you get a great chef they’ll prepare you just about anything you could want. It doesn’t get much better than that in the air!
In addition to the having one of the best first class cabins and top notch first class food, the staff is unbelievably great. Lucky, who is a deeply experienced luxury flyer, waxes poetic about the cabin crew on his first class flight with Etihad.
Once settled in all three first class crewmembers came by to introduce themselves. First off Succorina, the Indian cabin manager, came by to introduce herself. Then Pannatee, the Thai onboard chef came by to introduce herself. And then the half-German half-Japanese first class flight attendant (I never got her name, unfortunately) introduced herself as well. I can’t say enough about how freaking awesome these three were. Any three of those crew individually would have made a great flight, but together it was an all-star crew. Succorina wasn’t just extremely attentive, but was hilarious, engaging, and informal in a way I’ve not experienced on Etihad before. Pannatee wasn’t only great at preparing food and drinks, but also had the most genuine smile. And the Japanese/German flight attendant was awesome as well since we could communicate in German, and she was extremely attentive and proactive. I could tell it would be a fantastic flight. I was quickly offered a pre-departure beverage, and selected some champagne. I had a glass of Gosset, which was served with a bowl of dates, a hot towel, and a note from the cabin manager.
